Hot Bandito Brothers Teaser: ‘The Prototype’

The Bandito Brothers, the group that made the hit Act of Valor, is at it again with The Prototype. This is a hot package for an under $40 million action thriller in the vein of District 9 that wasn’t supposed to be auctioned until after I got back from vacation after July 4. Then the teaser leaked. Andrew Will is the writer and director and his producing partner is Shawn Wallace, and they have been working with Cantina Creative and the Bandito Bros in scouting, designing tests for the action scenes, etc. They worked under radar on Act of Valor, but no such luck this time. I got a peek at the teaser trailer, and it’s pretty impressive. WME Global chief Graham Taylor is getting barraged by calls, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a deal before the holiday.

The Whistleblower, DVD review

Rachel Weisz is known for being that rare thing - an actress who can play a heroine without being self-righteous. She excels in socially and politically conscious roles (Sunshine; Enemy at the Gates; The Constant Gardener), and so is perfectly cast in first-time director Larysa Kondracki's gruelling exposé of human trafficking in postwar Bosnia.

Based on a true story, the film follows Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraskan police officer who impulsively takes a job working for the United Nations as a peacekeeper in Bosnia in 1999. When she discovers a community of international cops, UN staff and military contractors involved in a sex-trafficking scandal, she tries to alert her superiors but her findings are rejected and she is ordered off her mission. The title of the film fills in the rest of the tale as she is forced to publicly blow the whistle on the cover-up.

On Human Trafficking: The Whistleblower

As Ambassador to UNICEF UK, in 2004 I was asked to visit Ecuador as part of my commitment to their End Child Exploitation campaign. I witnessed the devastating effects on many of the children I met there who had been trafficked to the cities to work on toxic dumpsites in Quito and Guayaquil, in the Bella Rico mines, and as sex workers in Quito. Many were living in horrific conditions and some were as young as five, depending on older children for their survival.

UN Screening Bosnian Sex Trafficking Drama ‘The Whistleblower’

After months of back and forth, the United Nations has told director Larysa Kondracki that her controversial film The Whistleblower will be given a special screening at UN headquarters on the week of Oct. 10. After the screening, a panel discussion will address the issue of sex trafficking in post-war Bosnia. It’s an embarrassing chapter for the UN, as the film depicts UN peacekeepers not only turning a blind eye to the trafficking of women forced into prostitution in post-war Bosnia, but actually assisting in the transport of sex slaves over the border and into unimaginable hellholes.

ANCHOR BAY FILMS PICKS UP FATHER OF INVENTION STARRING ACADEMY AWARD™ WINNER KEVIN SPACEY

Anchor Bay Films has released the trailer for the upcoming Kevin Spacey vehicle “Father of Invention” (he’s a father, not the father, I think). The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival back in 2010, and will finally come to theaters on October 14.
The trailer doesn’t look bad at all. The reviews out of Berlin didn’t look great — i.e. “comedies don’t get much more unfunny than ‘Father of Invention,’” Kirk Honeycutt from The Hollywood Reporter — but the trailer doesn’t look bad at all. And the cast looks impressive, with Spacey backed up by Johnny Knoxville, Heather Graham, John Stamos, Craig Robinson, Michael Rosenbaum, and Virginia Madsen.
